God rejects a fast that empties the stomach while protecting exploitation, violence, and self-interest. The fast He chooses loosens yokes, shares bread, shelters people, repairs breaches, and turns religious devotion into neighbor-serving righteousness.

Open the Text

Begin with the passage itself—its words, structure, setting, and relationship to the whole witness of Scripture.

Examine the Meaning

Study literary movement, historical context, theology, and biblical languages without inventing secret meanings.

Correct the Distortions

Name shallow readings, doctrinal shortcuts, cultural assumptions, and popular claims that the text cannot responsibly carry.

Apply the Truth

Move from interpretation into character, judgment, relationships, public responsibility, and faithful Christian practice.

WE TEACH TEACHERS

Follow the reasoning. Examine the conclusion.

Use each commentary with an open Bible and a page for your own observations. Give the passage the time it requires; the study time is a guide, not a deadline.

  1. Read the literary unit. Read the selected passage and the surrounding paragraphs. Identify the speaker, audience, setting, and movement of the argument.
  2. Trace the claim to the text. For each major conclusion, write down the supporting verses. Distinguish what the text explicitly states from an interpretive inference and a present-day application.
  3. Examine the language and alternatives. Keep word studies within the sentence and passage. Ask what evidence supports an interpretation, where faithful readers differ, and what remains uncertain.
  4. Prepare to teach responsibly. State the central claim in your own words, show its textual support, identify one misuse to avoid, and propose an application that follows from the passage.
